I have no idea how exactly this tradition started (i.e. what possessed me to commemorate the beginning of school with brownies) - but now that its been done three years in a row, its definitely a "tradition". The night before school started I made chocolate brownies, we stuck the only candle I could find on it, and made up a silly back-to-school song (tradition is we sing one, but we can never remember what we sang, so we make it up each year).
Here's my excited little school kids as we're heading out the door. Sydney is now in Year 1 (First Grade) and John is in Kindy (like US Preschool) for 4-year-olds. Sydney is full time and John is 5 days a fortnight.

So I'm excited that Sydney still fits in her size 6 uniform from last year, and John fits in the size 4 clothes I bought prematurely for Sydney last year but she outgrew before school started.
John is in the "Turtle" class and absolutely LOVES his teacher (and Mommy thinks she rocks too). Sydney has an incredible First Grade Teacher who Mommy also thinks rocks.

After two days of Year 1 Sydney announced that "its much different to Pre-Primary. There is a lot more work, and I mean A LOT. But its also quieter, and I like that". She is absolutely thriving, and yes, I'll brag, she's in the highest reading and spelling group and enjoying every minute of it.
