His family party wasn't until the weekend, but of course we had to have some cake on his actual birthday. I insisted that I be included in some photos since I'm never in them, so we had to relight the candles, sing again and blow them out again - he insisted we all help the second time round - so I could be in a photo. Yeah, this is the best one (pretty awful, I think I'll stay behind the camera).
Grandma and Pa came over in the afternoon to give him his main present and help us assemble it - a new Sand Pit (Sand Box for the Americans). This thing gets so much play, its wonderful. How many adults does it take to put together a Sand Pit? Answer: we didn't have enough to put it together correctly the first time!
On the weekend we had a family birthday party (the kids only get a kid party every other year). I'm not sure who had more fun in the Sand Pit, John or Uncle Paul. You decide.I like to bake, but I don't decorate cakes, until this year, that is. I decided it was time to try out some cake decorating and let him request what he wanted. Why did I even ask - Lightening McQueen, of course. I looked up Lightening McQueen cakes online and was faced with the prospect of fondant, heaps of red dye and an immense amount of pain and suffering. I figured there HAD to be a better (easier) way of representing Cars. Um, yeah, a race track. I think it turned out great. John loved it, and that's what mattered to me!
