Katy - our newest family member

When we found out we were moving back to Australia, I'm not sure who we called first - Rich's parents, or the Labrador breeders. Joke aside, we knew we'd be getting a new puppy for our family Christmas present. We were pretty much decided on the name Katy, after our beloved Katy, Texas, though I was really hoping Rich would give in and let me name her Hannity.

After some discussion, we decided we'd wait to get a new puppy until February - that would give us time to settle into the house, get all unpacked, school would be starting so I'd have more time, etc, etc. Well, that didn't happen. I made some calls to the breeders about 2-3 weeks after we'd moved back into the house to see where we were positioned on the list, and what do you know, there was a 9-week yellow female lab available, um, NOW.

I asked Rich if he minded if I took the kids out to see the puppies (there was a 6-week chocolate female available too) and he was like, yeah, go for it. He neglected to say what he really thought "you know you'll want to bring her home, Jen". Yeah, what he thought. We got to the house and there was Katy. She was sweet, she was gentle, she was adorable. She was MINE!!! I got Rich out of a meeting, oh yes I did, and said "can I bring her home, pleeeeeeease". He agreed. So soon we were loaded into the car with Katy nestled in a box between the kids in the back seat. First stop - City Farmers - we had NOTHING! So we bought food, bowls, a collar, a bed and a kennel and we were set.

Katy is proving to be a fantastic dog. She's still sweet, she's still gentle and she's Momma's girl. She was born with a hernia by her bum, so when we brought her home she had this cute little waddle and was a bit slower than one would expect a puppy to be. Perfect! She took to the kids instantly, and they to her, as you can see. Sydney was like a little mother to her, doting on her and making sure she was extra comfortable.

A week or so after she was home we tried to take her on her first walk. We made it exactly one house away from ours (the above picture is half a house away from ours) and back again. What a workout.
