There was a bit of excitement around our house the end of last week - we rescued a kitten! I was playing outside with the kids on Thursday afternoon and we kept hearing a screeching sound. Upon investigation we saw a little kitten wandering up and down the side of the house next to us. There is no one living there, so I wasn't sure what would happen to it. We do have a bit of a feral cat problem here in the mountains, so partly out of humanity and partly out of selfishness of not wanting another unfixed cat living around our yard, I rescued the kitten.
Sydney thought it was sooooooooo exciting. Mommy was being JUST LIKE DIEGO! I donned the oven gloves for protection, grabbed a box and set out to rescue the kitty. Sydney was my single girl cheering squad, watching me from our yard (our house is set uphill from the one next door) and telling me "you're doing great, Mommy". She was so excited when I had the kitty and wanted to badly to pet it, but was a good listener and didn't touch him.
We gave him some milk and a graham cracker (no, I don't keep cat food on hand) and provided him with an old towel for some warmth and comfort. She kept telling me he had the most beautiful eyes. I asked Sydney what she wanted to name him, and after much thought she announced "Kitty the Kitten". How lucky are we that we didn't let her name John?
Kitty the Kitten spent Thursday night in the box in our garage and Friday afternoon we drove him to the Animal Rescue Center - again, just like Diego. Sydney almost cried when we handed the box over to the rescue worker and asked me several times if we could keep Kitty the Kitten (yes, she said the WHOLE name each time she said it). Needless to say, as is the way with little children, Sydney hasn't asked about Kitty the Kitten since Sunday, so perhaps she's forgotten that she wanted another pet.
