The Papercut

This story is just too cute NOT to share with everyone.

Sydney's world almost came to an end this morning when she got her first papercut. She was drawing on my grocery list, which she does all the time, and cut the pointer finger on her left hand. As unfortunate as that was for her, it was also unfortunate for the people all around us at Costco who had to hear the ear-piercing screams that her finger hurt. Quite honestly, you would have thought she'd just been shot.

As the world collapsed around her, I hurriedly finished my shopping and checked out. She fell asleep in the car and I managed to put her in bed at home and she took a much-needed nap. When she got up, she continued to walk around the house holding her finger, telling me that it hurt and asking me for a "hair band". I asked her if she wanted a Band-aid and proceeded to wrap it up three different ways with three different bandages - none of which were good enough and they were all taken off as quickly as they were put on.

When Daddy got home he was promptly shown her finger and told how much it hurt. Dinner, bath and getting ready for bed were relatively pain-free. We've been having some trouble getting Syd to sleep and tonight was no different. Whilst I was in the kitchen doing the dishes, Rich walked in with Sydney and told me that she was asking for a "Hurt Band".

It turns out she had been asking me for a "Hurt Band", not a "Hair Band", all afternoon. Now, even if I had understood her very creative (we thought) request, why were the three bandages I gave her earlier not good enough? Answer: Daddy didn't do it! Daddy proceeded to put a "hurt band" on her finger and, what do you know, off to bed and to sleep almost instantly. She told me "Daddy made it all better".

I hope in the future Daddy is able to apply "hurt bands" to make all matter of things better - pulled teeth, broken bones, broken hearts.
